Interior Design Secret: All About Transitional Interior Design Style
What is Transitional Interior Design?
I would say that 90% of the time, I have the transitional design as the base style for all my clients. This is a huge designer secret.
And here are five reasons why I have this base style for my clients:
It is the most lasting look. It is based on having a base style that is simple, clean, and most of the time neutral. This base is the most lasting base that you can have in your home.
It stays current longer.
It saves money in the long run. Since the base of the transitional design is classic, this translates into saved money in the long run.
It is beautiful and classic. I have clients telling me that they still have furniture they bought 20 or more years ago. They still love it! It is current and beautiful.
It has a neutral base and will transform into any other style that you put with it. The look can change just by changing the pillows, lamps, and accessories.
Most people that I see online say that the transitional style is modern with traditional.
I disagree! The transitional style is the base simple style (does not have to be modern). It is comfy, has clean lines, and can go with the addition of one or two other styles.
The Styles of Some of My Clients
My clients Susan and Grant were transitional with Oriental. Susan asked me not to make it so oriental that her husband would feel that he had to walk around wearing a kimono. She totally cracked me up. But that was simply because we were starting with a transitional style base and adding her oriental design.
Steve and Dona built a house on a private island in Fiji. Yes, the most fun project ever. So of course they had a transitional furniture base along with a tropical island style. Dona always loved a touch of oriental accents.
My client Amy is absolutely Bohemian style. We are still working together. We have added some beautiful classic transitional style base pieces. She loves the Bohemian style but she also likes it simple. Some people with a Bohemian style have a very cluttered look. Hers is more of a simple Bohemian style.
My clients Irene and Bob have a beautiful style that is a transitional base with a Casual California Dramatic style. So elegant with elegant lighting, but tastefully done with natural Californian natural materials. Irene is from Greece and loves the white walls, light floors, and Greecian key details.
My client Lisa had a barn house. Her base was transitional and her additional styles were an old carriage house design. She had many antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces. That is such a fun, unique, one-of-a-kind interior design.
So you get the idea?
I hope this gives you a glimpse of what the transitional base is.
What Is Your Unique Interior Design Style?
Your interior design style usually is not just one style. It is a mixture of 2 or 3 styles.
The term for this is “eclectic” interior design. It is a blend of 2 or 3 styles in an interior design plan.
It seems that so much of the interior design these days is the same. Today, I want to take a stand against sameness. We are not the same. We are unique and individual. It will be great to find out what your interior design styles are. In episode 3, we determine your interior design personality style.
In the next 12 episodes, I will help you establish your furniture style or styles. After that, I will continue with your interior design plan.
But, before we go into that, I wanted to talk about how every person is different. They prefer different colors, patterns, textures, aesthetics, etc.
Your interior design style affects everything. It affects all of your selections which is why it is sooooo important to establish. Not only does your interior design affect your furnishings, but also your lighting, wall treatments, window coverings, area rugs, accessories, and pretty much all of your interior design choices. It also affects your pattern choices, your texture and contrast levels and so much more.
Your interior design style also affects your thoughtful color schemes.
There are some items that I like to concentrate on that are classics. I believe that it is important to plan your interior design to be as lasting as possible.
What’s Next For You?
The styles we will be covering in the next 12 episodes are divided into 4 main categories or style groupings.
Again, the next 12 episodes are going to talk about all the additional styles that you can put with your transitional base.
For each style, I will be breaking down everything, explaining the different color schemes, elements, characteristics, and accessory pieces that you can look for to achieve the design style or styles that are yours.
Also, if you want to see examples of what the furnishings from these styles look like, you can go to Sheree’s Shop. As you listen to the episodes about the styles and browse the examples of the style furnishings and accessories in Sheree’s Shop, make a note in your interior design plan file about which style or styles fits you and your family the best. No matter which design style or styles you choose, you should consider layering styles and treatments for a designer look.
