Is the Farmhouse Style Still Trending in 2022?
Today, I will talk about the Farmhouse Furniture Style. But first, here is something that I did not know until I read about it in the bible…
Be Blessed Verse:
So God creates all the animals and the birds and brings them to Adam to see what he will call them and “whatever the man (Adam) called every living creature, that was its name” (Gen. 2.19).
Adam named all the birds and beasts, but no partner was found for him. Isn’t that cool? Adam named all the animals.
Why did God let Adam name the animals?
It gave Adam dominion over the animals and made him aware of his aloneness. God later created Eve for him from Adam’s rib…only God could do that!
Someone who lives in the country and on a farm usually really appreciates nature. Many times the Farmhouse style has pictures of animal art.
As a woman of faith, I am so happy to walk with my Lord and soooo thankful for Him in my and my family's lives. My walk with the Lord has been an amazing blessing, adventure, and journey that I am daily thankful and grateful for. I invite the Prince of Peace, Jesus, into my home daily! I don’t want to live without His peace in my home and life.
“What Is My Furniture Style” Series
I will be covering 12 Interior Design Furniture Styles in a series called, “What is my Furniture Style?”, from Episodes 6 - 17. These Furniture Styles are the most common furniture styles in the current furniture market.
Starting this episode, I will be talking about the 3 versions of the Traditional Furniture Style. They are The Classic Traditional, The Farmhouse, and The Country or Provencial Style. There are many Traditional Styles, but these are 3 of the main traditional styles being used in interiors these days.
What is nice is that after you listen to today’s episode, The Farmhouse Furniture Style, visit my website and go to Sheree’s Shop, and scroll down to the Farmhouse Furniture Style that you just learned about.
There you will find many pictures of the Farmhouse Furniture Style. You will see sofas, sectionals, coffee tables, end tables, table and floor lamps, accessories, and area rugs. These items are in many price ranges. This helps you see some examples of what furnishings and accessories in this style look like with real current examples.
The styles in the “What is My Furniture Style?” series are broken down into 4 main categories that also coincide with the Interior Design Personality Quiz in Episode 3 where you answered As, Bs, Cs, and Ds. For more information on this, go to Episode 3 - My Interior Design Personality Quiz.
What Is a Farmhouse Furniture Style
The Farmhouse Furniture Style is a more simple style of furniture that gives a casual aesthetic. It is warm, inviting, and timeless.
While the Farmhouse Style tends to reflect the aesthetics of rural architecture, it also embraces modern comforts combined with the transitional style (see episode 6), creating a look that feels both cozy and stylish.
Long ago, people oftentimes made furniture that was rudimentary, basic furnishings.
There is a trend these days of incorporating the old, country furnishings, with the modern furniture of today. This old furniture is often passed down from parents and grandparents and can have sentimental value.
Other styles blend well with this style. Vintage furniture is collected and utilized. Also, the industrial style is sometimes coupled with this style.
The Farmhouse Style reminds me of growing up in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County. The countryside there is glorious and beautiful! Growing up there was really one of the highlights of my life! I still have lots of my family there and I visit as often as I can!
The Farmhouse Style is a more country traditional furniture style than the more formal classic traditional style in episode 9. The Farmhouse Style is an interior design style that is natural practical, simple, and charming.
Although the Farmhouse Style has always been around, it was made famous in recent years by Chip and Joanna Gaines of the Fixer Upper TV Series. They also have a wonderful store in Texas called Magnolia Home. They are extremely successful with this now-famous style.
But the question that we asked at the beginning of this episode, is whether the Farmhouse Style is still current and trending? The answer was yes… and no.
There was some backlash because there are some aspects of this style that have really been seriously overdone. To name just a couple:
Shiplap wood plank walls and Barn Doors.
Even though Joanna Gaines has a Farmhouse Style that really is lovely, even she is moving away from her original classic style to a more eclectic style.
This creates much more diversity in the Farmhouse Style.
Whichever additional style is incorporated is dependent on the clients and their personal styles.
You can check out my other style episodes 6-17 to see how to incorporate the additional style that you are adding to the Farmhouse Style.
Whichever additional style is added to the farmhouse style, it can be designed to be very classic and pretty.
That being said, if Farmhouse is truly your dream style, go for it. There are endless ways to interpret it, so add your own personal touches and flare!
Life in a Farmhouse Style: My Memories
The Farmhouse Furniture Style is a beautiful style. It reminds me of taking walks in the beautiful country among the moss dripping ancient oaks of the San Luis Obispo County area, where I grew up.
In Paso Robles and Atascadero, we would pick wildflowers, wild berries, mushrooms, and herbs in baskets.
I still collect flowers with my granddaughter. Recently, we pressed them and put them into a pretty journal book for her Mommy for Mother’s Day.
This country farmhouse style reminds me of slower days…
Again, sitting in a home in this Farmhouse Style reminds me of my Grandma and her 4 sisters who lived in the area too. They all competed, who could cook the best. I loved that because they were all great cooks.
The blackberry cobbler my Aunt Vy made was outrageously wonderful. My Aunt Pansy made cookies to die for. My grandma cooked and canned and her home always smelled glorious.
This is a style you can go to relax, be quiet and enjoy pleasantly. I often went there during college when I needed a break.
A porch swing is magnificent and I will forever love the giant yard swing that my Grandpa made. He died at 42, before I was born, in a tractor accident. It rolled over on him. But he left that wonderful yard; it was a child’s dream.
I would go to my grandparent's and my great grandparent's houses in the area to just be still and know that He is God. Again getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city areas can be quite appealing to many.
Even if Farmhouse is not your style, if you are in someone else’s house that has this style, you can relax because this home is inviting. The owner is usually very hospitable and loves to serve great, wonderful homegrown meals. Meals from their land.
We had many family bar-b-ques and ate at my great grandparent's farm every Sunday. I will never forget those times as long as I live. My cousins and I reminisce about that whenever we see each other. We played outside with each other for hours. It was very fun! Not only will you relax and get stuffed, but you will be welcomed with open arms. So slow down, pull up a chair, and enjoy!

Styling Ideas for The Farmhouse Traditional Style
Inviting, beautiful traditional area rugs, rag rugs, or woven rugs on wood floors
For a less busy look, incorporate the Classic Transitional sofas and chairs as a base (episode 6) and use natural neutral texture or linen with clean silhouettes and sleek lines
The furnishings have simplicity and fewer curves than the Classic Traditional styles like French or English, although, as we mentioned above, these styles can easily be mixed
Old milk cans or mason jar vases can work well with this furniture style
Rustic wood and open shelving are common in this style
Burlap and more textured woven fabrics are common in this style
Double French doors to the outside or between rooms go with this style as well
White or Wood Kitchen Cabinets
Fireclay (more durable than porcelain) Farmhouse Sinks are a must with their cool “apron fronts”
Wood Beamed Ceilings add to the country charm - remember wood is a color and should go with your color scheme
This style can incorporate the modern comforts such as stainless steel appliances that form a beautiful contrast
Simple round wood and exposed bulb chandeliers fit this style perfectly
Flowers, wildflowers, and herbs in textured natural baskets can be design elements that complement this style
Antique Brass, Bronze, or Black metals on drawer hardware compliment this Farmhouse style
Wood shutters can be elegant and functional at the same time
Add market pillows with words printed on them are great rustic touches (think potato sack material)
Candlesticks and candles of all kinds can be quite subtle and pretty
Glossy accessories fit pretty as they are strategically placed for contrast
Beadboard and Shiplap paneling painted white are standards for this style
Fireplaces are beautiful additions to the esthetics of this style
Large simple rustic framed mirrors fit in this interior
Opulent down bedding with lots and lots of pillows that you can sink into create a cozy comfy feel
Floral scents, natural scents, and rich spices scents excite the senses
Medium to light natural woods look gorgeous in this style
Soft or country music sets the mood for these homes (or any style of music you like)
Livestock, horses, cows, countryside, and still life art fit this style
Nature, especially floral art can be soft and pretty with this style
These people are very family-oriented, gallery walls highlighting the much-loved family are usually essential
Small details like sisal fringe on pillows can add a pretty softening feel
Antique lighting fixtures or fixtures with wood beads
Never forget lace fabrics in this feminine-leaning style. This can be used on tablecloths, pillows and so much more.
Lots of texture is used to create the casual feel
Color Scheme
White, beige, greys, and greige (grey with beige) neutral paint colors are ideal for your farmhouse-style home. Any neutral you love and earth tones will be best because they create a natural outdoor in the country base.
These natural colors also make rooms appear brighter, larger, and more inviting. Go with shades of beige, tan, brown, and white. If you need accent colors, opt for light blues, yellows, and greens.
Black and white are always beautiful with this color scheme. The Black and white kitchen floor and the accents are the other colors of your color scheme. There are endless possibilities.
Be creative. You may throw in a dark or black piece to add drama and contrast for effect, or as an accent here and there. Perhaps kitchen and bath hardware.
Wood plays a large role in the Farmhouse style. Wide plank wood flooring and tables in a rich woodgrain waxed finish add elegance and beauty.
Humor can be used in this style because these people often work hard and play hard. This interior design style brings a bit of nostalgia. My grandma had word plaques that I loved, it was sooo her!
“Friends and Family Gather Here”
“Home Sweet Farmhouse”
“Hold On, I need to overthink this…”
“In the south, we don’t hide the CRAZY, we sit it on the front porch and give it sweet tea”
These sayings soooo remind me of my Grandma. She had them on the wall and she would say them. They always cracked me up! Fond memories!
So, if there is a fabulous view of the countryside or mountains, be sure to highlight that. Perhaps the view is the focal point of the room.
It is possible to have this calm, relaxed feeling of beauty, and the natural feeling indoors and out, even if you live in the city or the suburbs.
Designer Pro Tip
For the Farmhouse Style, sometimes it is necessary to find wonderful old pieces that can be refinished to match your color scheme and style.
Lighting is a biggie in the Farmhouse style can have wood with metal, exposed hanging light bulbs or lamps, basketweaves, metals, or beads. I love the dimmed lighting with flickering candle look bulbs to create that cozy wonderful feeling.
Flowers, flowers, and more florals. Whether they be real, great silks (do a mixture of both and keep them guessing), or perhaps subtle floral prints. Some like a lot of this. Say, print wallpapers, etc., and others only like the florals to be as accents on a neutral background.
Either way, make your soul sing with what you love…
Lace draperies may be perfect for some and too much for others…
There is a move to have “real” farmhouse accessories for a classier, more authentic design. Accessories can keep it simple, natural, and elegant for the most beautiful, classic, and lasting style.
Done well this style is very classic and will not have to be updated for years to come.
